Cultural Sources of National Identity: Hermano Vianna's ;The Mystery of Samba;.
This is a book report on Herman Vianna's "The Mystery of Samba", a cultural anthropology study of music in Brazil, particularly the use of 'racially-mixed' culture as a symbol for all of Brazilian culture. The samba, Brazil's national dance/rhythm, was transported to the national spotlight in the 1920s, though its 'authentic, populist roots' are questioned by Vianna in his analysis of Gilberto Freyre's seminal Brazilian ethnographies, and his analysis of Brazilian culture in general. 5 pgs.
