This is a five-page paper on doing research inside of a prison. Prison research has previously been done from outsiders, not guards or inmates. James Marquart goes inside of the Texas prison to do research as an acting guard. This allows him to view prison life as a guard and as a confidante to some of the inmates. As a guard he must appear genuine in his role. This places him in danger at times. Once he is actually involved in a fight with a prisoner who hits him on the head and leaves a large bump on his head. This actually is a plus because guards and inmates begin to accept him as a guard. There are many advantages of doing research in a prison, because every one is natural and "real" information can be received. However, there are dangers to doing research in the prison because there are fights and other situations that you cannot report or lose your role as a guard.
