Negotiating Collections: The Role of the School Library Media Specialist in Todays Schools
This 5-page undergraduate essay explores the role of the school library media specialist by first describing an interview, then a day on the job of a school library media specialist, and finally proving a scholarly essay about the role of the school library media specialist. This essay, then, can be seen as three separate assignments. The first part of the essay describes an interview with a school library media specialist, and describes the answers given to five questions: How will technology affect collections in the future?; Have collections changed student library use?; How have collections and their management changed?; Do students play a role in collections and collections management?; What role do students play?. Secondly, this essay gives a journal entry describing the author’s reactions to participation in a day spent at a library with a school library media specialist. The journal entry describes a class being taught in the library by the school library media specialist, who helped students negotiate and properly use the library collection. Finally, this essay includes a brief scholarly paper which examines the impact of technology on collections management and the role of the school library media specialist.
