Portuguese traveler Raphael Hythloday tells Thomas More and Peter Giles about the ideal conditions and institutions of the inhabitants of the island called Utopia in the isthmus, which he boasts are far better than those in England at that time. Hythloday describes this society as based on rational thought, communal property, optimum productivity, no class distinctions, no greed for wealth or money, no poverty, a minimum of crime and immorality. Although the men dominate Utopia and women are politically powerless and without identity, women are considered privileged and enjoy greater advantages in it than those in England.
