The Effects of American Policies on Early Canadian Economic Development.
This paper will look at the dynamics and influence of American policies and objectives on Canadian economic development. By virtue of their importance and prominence in the history of US-Canada relations, the primary focus will be on the War of 1812 and the Reciprocity Treaty of 1854. While it might be argued that the 1854 Treaty just falls shy of 'early' economic history in Canada, the importance of the Treaty marks a milestone in north-south relations that is so important that it warrants the flexible use of the word 'early'. In any case, the motivations for the Treaty were manifest before 1854 and though it was not an inevitable outcome, it is in no way accurate to include the 1854 Treaty in a paper on early economic history. 16 pgs. 11 f/c. 14b.
