This paper discusses whether or not democracy really exists, or is even possible, in Latin America in light of the acute social, political, and economic inequalities and institutional weaknesses that characterize most of the region. The paper discusses the main problem of inequality existing along economic, racial, gender, and regional lines. Because of this reality, economic growth and "free elections" do not necessarily translate into democracy for the average Latin American citizen. 10 pgs. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
