This is a memorandum about urban bias and urban development in Thailand. However, according to World Bank estimates, 20 percent of the Thai population, as of 2001, lives in urban areas, a pointer to the fact that possibly since the crisis, with overall growth rates plummeting from as high as 10 percent in the 80's to a mere 1.8 percent in 2001, labor demand falling, and unemployment increasing in the urban areas, migration from Bangkok and its surrounding back to the rural areas is manifest.
